After more than a month, we're continuing our campaign to raise money to keep operating Deadline Detroit while we retool and talk to prospective investors.
We want to thank all of you who have contributed to help us pay the bills and publish a little free-lance work. We've gotten contributions from readers including former colleagues in Detroit. We've also gotten contributions from around the country including from some of my former colleagues at the Washington Post.
But we still are working to get more contributions.
We've had some folks ask: Why should I pay when I can get it for free?
Good question. The only problem is that we may not be around if we don't have a certain level of funding.
As is often the case, some people feel it's better to let others pay.
Unfortunately, if everyone thought that way, we'd have no public radio or TV.
Unlike many other businesses that sell products or perform services like plumbing or repairing cars, we give away our product for free every day. We're working on strategies to make ourselves self-sufficient.
But for now, we're asking for readers to contribute a little.
I'm old school. I always think the more media voices we have in town, the more informed we are.
The better the competition, the better the media.
Civilization won't end in Detroit if we go away.
But we want badly to stick around.
We're passionate about journalism and Detroit, and even though we're very critical at times of the city, we want nothing more than Detroit to succeed.
That being said, we're asking those who want to help, to contribute, even if it's $5 or $10.
