Amazon.com, the ever-expanding online giant retailer, plans to spend nearly $90 million to open a distribution warehouse on former General Motors Corp. property at 13000 Eckles Road in Livonia to serve customers across the Midwest, Crain's Detroit Business reports.

Amazon plans to hire at least 1,000 workers for the facility which is called a regional fulfillment center, reports Crain's Lindsay VanHulle, who cites a memo from the Michigan Economic Development Corp. It's unclear when the facility will become operational. 

The Michigan Strategic Fund, a unit of the MEDC, on Tuesday approved a $7.5-million grant for Amazon.
