The Detroit Free Press has a new top editor.

Robert Huschka, who has held key leadership positions during more than 16 years at the Detroit Free Press, takes over the post he'd occupied on an interim basis for more than two months, reporter Christopher Kirkpatrick writes.

Paul Anger retired from in May. The Freep reports:

Free Press President and Publisher Joyce Jenereaux said Huschka will play a leading role in growing the Free Press’ audience, creating new ways to reach out to the community and expanding the Free Press’ portfolio of products to meet the changing needs of its customers.

“Robert has the experience, instincts and leadership skills to boldly move the Free Press forward in a digital age,” Jenereaux said.  “Readers can count on him to increase our focus on watchdog journalism and to deliver the kind of compelling and engaging content that has long made the Free Press our region’s news and information leader.”

Huschka, who was named managing director in March, has been interim executive editor for more than two months during an extensive national search.
