Embattled City Councilman George Cushingberry on Tuesday cleared up one aspect of his on-going streak of bad publicity by correcting a story by WDIV-TV about the state of his driver's license. (The story also was summarized yesterday on Deadline Detroit.)
According to Christine Ferretti in the Detroit News, Cushingberry, a former state lawmaker and Wayne County commissioner, said Tuesday he has paid off several hundred dollars in parking tickets owed to the city. The fines had resulted in a hold on his license that would have prevented it from being renewed when it expired in 2016, according to officials with the Michigan Secretary of State.
The story on WDIV-TV said Cushingberry's license was suspended when he was stopped by Detroit Police last week.
State officials said Cushingberry’s license was briefly suspended in 2012 because of an unpaid ticket. That matter was later resolved.
Cushingberry claimed the tickets are “fully paid.”
Todd Russell Perkins, Cushingberry's attorney, urged reporters to go beyond the reporting of such Cushingberry problems as bankruptcy and the traffic stop and listen to what the councilman has to say.
