After a good while, you had to wonder if Matty Moroun and company really gave a hoot what local people thought, particularly when it came to the decrepit train station in Corktown that has too often been the backdrop for out-of-town reporters chronicling the ruin porn in Detroit.
But hey, just maybe, he cares a little bit.
Proof: His folks have issued a statement to Metro Times about the Michigan Central Station after reports came out that the station had applied for a permit for a freight elevator.
Here's what the statement said:
“We are obtaining building permits to install a service elevator. A new freight elevator is the next step of work on the venerable Michigan Central Depot and will allow the smooth installation of windows and roof work as we continue to prepare the building for a new day.
“As with the rehabilitation of any historic structure, it always takes more time and money than first expected. In addition to applying for the building permits we are keeping City of Detroit officials updated on our progress and plans.”
The statement also included some factoids about the station: Over $4 million has been invested to date of interior enhancement, preparation and security work, and electricity was restored to the interior in 2012.
To be honest, it's not like it's a benevolent act at this point to upgrade the station. The area is blooming and has become a hot spot for development and new restaurants and bars. In other words, there's plenty of money to be made by investing in the area.
It looks like Moroun finally gets it. Sadly, Moroun could have led the way. Instead, he's following the obvious lede. -- Allan Lengel
