Max Scherzer is scheduled to start the Major League All-Star Game Tuesday night at Citi Field in New York.
The announcement is not a huge surprise, but Scherzer, 28, pitched as recently as Saturday -- coincidentally, it was his first loss of the season, in which his record is 13-1. Tigers manager Jim Leyland is running the American League lineup in the game.
Last year, the Tigers' Justin Verlander started for the American League, but was hit hard.
Scherzer ranks first in the AL in wins (13), second in strikeouts (152), second in WHIP -- walks plus hits per inning pitched -- (0.98) and first in win percentage (92.9%).
Tony Paul of The Detroit News reports the Tigers PR chief tipped off the “news” of Scherzer, about a half-hour before the announcement, saying he was Citi Field-bound with Leyland and a certain Tigers starter.
