The Detroit Institute of Art is under siege. Some people want to sell off the museum's gems to pay off debt and make sure people have full pensions. Others don't.
But there's an upside to all the tumult and bankruptcy talk.
The DIA has gotten more attention than ever before.
“Name a media outlet, and they’ve been here or called,” department director Pam Marcil told Michael Hodges of the Detroit News.
Hodges writes that she rattled off news organizations including Japan’s Kyodo News Service, the New York Times, Le Monde, Mexico City’s Reforma, and just recently, a film crew from “60 Minutes.”
“I see it as a positive in a negative situation. The DIA is getting worldwide coverage," she said." Reporters from elsewhere are impressed and astonished by our collection. You hear over and over, ‘I didn’t know that was here!’ ” -- Allan Lengel
