Jose Iglesias

Last year we saw the Tigers limp to the finish line in the 2013 season. It was painful watching Miguel Cabrera limp to the plate and wince when he swung his bat.

Now, Lynn Henning of the Detroit News writes that the team seems to be limping to the starting line in the 2014 season.

Henning notes that pitcher Anibal Sanchez was scratched from Monday's game against the Nationals because of pain in the back and write shoulders.  Jose Iglesias may have stress fractures in both legs, which would put him out for a while. And left fielder Andy Dirks will be out for three months because of back surgery. Henning noted that Sanchez may not have any serious ailment.

Henning writes:

"The Tigers have had better spring camps."

He writes that Iglesias has said he has the stress fractures. But the Tigers aren't yet convinced that's the case. On Tuesday, he'll be examined by Thomas Stanton, an orthopedic surgeon who works at The Steadman Clinic in Vail, Colo.

Henning notes:

"Stanton’s diagnosis could make it an all-timer in terms of losing key people for lengthy stretches...It has been a bruising spring camp for the Tigers. Monday’s events, from Sanchez’s sore shoulder to Iglesias’ pessimistic report, were nothing the Tigers would celebrate, even on a day when green beer flowed and shamrocks connote something the Tigers haven’t much enjoyed in Florida in 2014: luck."   -- Allan Lengel
