The Tigers' offense surged in the eighth inning Sunday night against -- of all pitchers -- the all-but-untouchable Aroldis Chapman as the Tigers rallied for a 7-6 victory over the Cincinnati Reds, writes Mlive's Chris Iott.
Opposing hitters were just 9-for-100 with 54 strikeouts against Chapman when he entered in the eighth with a 6-3 lead and two runners on base. Chapman had allowed one earned run in 30 innings pitched this season and entered the game with an ERA of 0.30.
But pinch-hitter Brennan Boesch, playing on a sprained right ankle, greeted Chapman with a single to right to load the bases. Matt Young, a left-handed hitter who appeared to have little chance of getting a hit off Chapman, came up next and was hit by a pitch that barely grazed his elbow. That cut the Reds' lead to 6-4.
