Detroit River

Detroit River
Waterfront property around the country has often been coveted real estate. But Detroit, for far too long, has done too little to utilize that property.
John Gallagher of the Detroit Free Press writes that Detroit leaders are "hoping to move quickly to choose a team of architects and planners to create a new vision for Detroit’s east riverfront district — 400 acres of land often called the most important but underused development zone in the city."
But there are challenges. Leaders want to avoid making the east riverfront a gated enclave for the wealthy, Gallagher writes, and instead make it inclusive.
Plus, he reports, the city hopes to make the riverfront a recreational destination and a retail, dining and entertainment option for the region.
