A trial date of Jan. 26 has been set in Wayne County Circuit Court for well-known graffiti artist Shepard Fairey, who is charged with illegally tagging buildings, WWJ reports.
Fairey, who completed a commissioned giant mural on the One Campus Martius building (the former Compuware Building) in downtown Detroit earlier this year, faces charges of malicious destruction of property. The charges include damage to buildings and a railroad bridge.
Some observers wonder why the city prosecutes the case against the well-known artist when it has many other high-priority crimes.
A city attorney says three of nine damaged properties are city-owned and total damages are about $30,000, WWJ reports.
Fairey’s lawyer says prosecutors have offer no proof Fairey was responsible for the tagging, the station adds.
