Ex-President Donald Trump is stepping up his game in an attempt to influence Michigan's upcoming election.

On Monday, he issued a statement backing gubernatorial candidate Tudor Dixon's running mate, Shane Hernandez. He also called for GOP leaders to "work together," reports The Detroit News.

His remarks come several days before Saturday's Republican nominating convention in Lansing that could turn contentious. Former gubernatorial candidate Ralph Rebandt said Monday he'll seek the lieutenant governor nomination.

"This is who Tudor wants and therefore, Shane is who I want as your next lieutenant governor," Trump is quoted as saying. "All Republicans must unite and work hard for Tudor and Shane."

He earlier endorsed pending nominees Kristina Karamo for secretary of state and Matt DePerno for attorney general.

Dixon is challenging Gov. Gretchen Whitmer Nov. 8.
