Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump took his first step to directly address African Americans, speaking Saturday at the Great Faith Ministries International in Detroit, telling the congregation: "We are all brothers and sisters. . . . We must love each other and support each other, and we are all in this together.”
“I will always support your church always and defend your right to worship,” said Trump, who was introduced by Bishop Wayne T. Jackson to polite applause, according to Chad Livengood and Leonard Fleming of The Detroit News.
Trump went on to say that “all across this land that the civil rights movement lifted up its soul and lifted up our nation. It’s from these pews that our nation has been inspired.”
Meanwhile, local Democrats blasted Trump;s appearance, the Detroit Free Press reports.
"This is the most phony major party nominee that I’ve seen in my lifetime, and that’s why we’re skeptical," Mayor Mike Duggan said at a news conference with Congresswoman Brenda Lawrence, D-Southfield. "I feel like I'm watching the next season of 'The Apprentice.; "
