Two children, both girls of an unknown age, were hospitalized Thursday after being bitten by stray dogs, believed to be pit bulls, that entered the grounds of their northwest Detroit school, Bates Academy.

Detroit Public Schools Community District Superintendent Nikolai Vitti said on Thursday the students were taken to a hospital and are in stable condition.
The ages of the students were not released, but the school serves students in kindergarten through eighth grade.
The school sits on a corner lot near a field where some students were playing with two pit bulls, Vitti said. The students were told by adults to stop playing with the dogs, Vitti said, and some left the area.
One of the dogs entered the building and was captured by animal control officers. The second is still free and was being sought by officers.
Bates Academy used a "controlled dismissal" to ensure students remained safe as they left.
