The University of Michigan is investigating what it said could be a a  norovirus outbreak on campus at West and South quad housing units.

The university says 75 to 100 students sought treatment for gastrointestinal illness in the last few days, according to the University Record, an online publication for faculty and staff.

"This appears to be a viral-type illness, like norovirus,"  Dr. Robert Winfield, chief health officer said, according to the report. "Test results sent to the Michigan Department of Community Health won't be complete until late Friday afternoon or early next week."

The university has instituted special virus-related cleaning procedures in all dining facilities and all residence halls, the publication reports.
