Mary Sue Coleman, the University of Michigan's first female president, announced she is calling it quits when her contract expires in June 2014.
The move was expected, according to the Board of Regents.
"You just know when it's time, and it's time," Coleman said to the Free Press.
Since her tenure began in 2002, Coleman saw a big drop in state funding and dealt with the sticky issue of affirmative action, which she was an advocate of.
Her tenure was also marked by over a billion dollars in new construction and an aggressive fundraising campaign that raised a record $3.2 billion.
