After being closed since last year because of the pandemic, the U.S. on Monday reopens the Detroit-Windsor border to vaccinated, nonessential travelers entering the U.S. from Canada.

The opening is expected to benefit Metro Detroit businesses, particularly malls, where Canadians have often come to shop.

The new U.S. policy applies to people entering from any of the Canadian and Mexican borders. Michigan has three crossing from Canada: Detroit, Port Huron and Sault Ste. Marie.

Up until now, essential workers such as doctors, nurses and truckers have been allowed into the U.S.

The new policy also allows non-U.S. citizen air travelers to enter the U.S. if they are fully vaccinated and provide proof.
