The UAW is pushing back on plans by the Big Three to restart factory operations as early as May 4.
"At this point in time, the UAW does not believe the scientific data is conclusive that it is safe to have our members back in the workplace," president Rory Gamble said in a statement. "We have not done enough testing to really understand the threat our members face. We want to make sure the scientific data is supportive and every possible health protocols and enhanced protections are in place before UAW members walk into the workplace."
According to the Free Press, General Motors plans to start sending some workers into plants next week to prep for a restart, Fiat Chrysler said early this month that its goal is to reopen May 4, and Ford says it's still working out the details of a resumption.
The plants faced backlash for waiting to close as the coronavirus spread, infecting workers. Ford at one point said it wouldn't shut down a factory until three Covid-19 cases were reported within it. More than two dozen UAW members have died of the disease since.
