A couple of years ago, dining publication Eater Detroit wrote that downtown steakhouse Prime + Proper would be "joined by an ultra-exclusive underground bar named Cash Only" that would ban cell phones, credit cards, and sell libations via checks handwritten with a quill pen.
Since then, we hadn't heard a peep about Cash Only — perhaps because it's that exclusive, or perhaps because it took a while to open. But this morning, WXYZ and Mojo in the Morning on Channel 955 have a segment on what they describe as the "new" bar.
Cash Only, in all its exclusivity, apparently does indeed have a no cell phone policy. It also sends elaborate invites in the form of gilded books that appear to have other passport-sized books inside. Who's invited? Folks like Channel 955's Mojo.
Mojo says his gilded invite came with the directive, "shhh, don't talk about this" (we're unsure if that's verbatim). It also came with a warning that his phone would be wrapped upon entry because Cash Only wants "you to enjoy the experience" (unsure if that's also verbatim).
The Mojo team has a friend named Katrina who recently visited the bar. Unclear if she was specifically invited or what she may have done to access this elite realm of cool and quill pens. Eater, in 2016, wrote that Cash Only would be "seemingly catered towards celebrities and high-profile loyal patrons."
Here's what else we know:
- Cash Only is an 80 seater in the basement of Prime + Proper and can only be accessed via a hidden entrance
- Eater said the bar was to debut in Spring of 2017, based on a press release from the secretive bar
- In that press release, Cash Only said it would "have interactive cocktails that ... cultivate the eyes, nose, and mouth.”
