A recent Detroit News investigation found that Detroit Medical Center doctors and staff for years had voiced concerns about dirty, broken and lost surgical tools, an issue that can obviously have serious repercussions.
Now, the union, American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees, has weighed in with a report blaming cost-cutting for a decade of problems with dirty surgical instruments at the hospital’s Midtown campus, Joel Kurth writes at The Detroit News. The document proposes investments to fix the situation.
“The TRUTH is that both ... workers and their unions have been begging management to address these issues FOR YEARS,” read the report from Donna Stern, unit chair of AFSCME Local 140. It represents 250 Children’s workers, including a quarter of the Midtown campus’ 70 sterilization technicians.
