For the second straight Sunday, Ukrainian-Americans and others rallied and marched in downtown to show solidarity with residents of Ukraine, who have been besieged for a week and a half.

The demonstration against Russia's invasion began at 2 p.m. at Spirit Plaza on Woodward at Jefferson.

The event is organized by two women -- Natasha Kinsky Marrel and Olga Gennadyevna Grushko, 46, of Ann Arbor.

"We invite you to join the antiwar rally," Grushko, a University of Michigan research lab specialist, posts on Facebook. "We demand to end all military action on Ukrainian territory, withdraw the Russian troops and reaffirm Ukrainian independence.

"We believe that the people of Ukraine will prevail, and we stand with them in this fight! Glory to Ukraine! ... Their pain is our pain! And their fight is our fight! ... History is made by those who show up."

Another supporter, Jenny Feterovich of Ferndale, posts: "Amplify your voice with us this Sunday [in] downtown Detroit! ... Let's make Ukraine proud. Bring your friends, parents, kids, dogs and grandmas. Make some signs, buy some flags and most of all bring your spirit!"

She came here from Moscow with her family in 1989 as part of a wave of Jewish refugees from the Soviet Union, Crain's Detroit Business reports.

"The suffering that's happening there [in Ukraine] is absolutely unbelievable," she said. ...

She studied IT at Wayne State University before pursuing a career as a serial entrepreneur. She started her company, Ferndale-based Parliament Studios Inc., 12 years ago.

That film studio made a 2018 documentary about "The Russian Five" players on the Detroit Red Wings.
