Anita Baker

And now for the other side of the story involving an arrest warrant that was issued last week for recording artist Anita Baker.

First off, on Monday, a judge dismissed the warrant.

The warrant was issued after Baker failed to show up in court to respond to a lawsuit  filed by Ray Smith Painting and Decorating, which claimed she failed to pay $15,000 owed for painting her Grosse Pointe home. Baker claims she never even knew about the lawsuit.

Hank Winchester of WDIV reports that Baker's attorney, Jamal Hamood, said his client had already paid a lot.

“She had paid them almost $60,000, and the contract was supposed to be far less than that, and at the end, ended up with a job that was very shoddy. Very poor workmanship. She has pictures,” Hamood said.

The painter filed the lawsuit in 2010 for the $15,000.

“The plaintiff decided to dismiss that lawsuit, voluntarily on his own,” Hamood said, according to WDIV.  “So, Ms. Baker believed that the matter was over at that point.”

But the lawsuit was refiled four months later and Baker was never served papers.

An April hearing has been set for the lawsuit, WDIV reports.  -- Allan Lengel
