Update, 7:45 a.m. Thursday: A $250,000 check has been written to Detroit's Spain Elementary School for building improvements, WDIV reports. In addition, $50,000 will go for new technology and $200,000 for services. Students and staff were also given gift cards.
Original article, Thursday morning:
City inspectors found plenty wrong last month at Spain Elementary School including damage to the ceiling, wall and floor of the gymnasium, rodents, loose door frames, missing floor tiles, broken glass, water damage and mold. It is just one of many Detroit schools inspectors found in poor condition.
Now, the good news.
Ellen DeGeneres will announce Thursday that her show will donate more money to Spain than it has ever given away before. The gift will help repair the infrastructure and provide technology improvements to the school at 3700 Beaubien, Mara MacDonald of WDIV reports.
DeGeneres delivered the news on Wednesday from her Los Angeles studio to the students, who cheered and chanted "Ellen." Staff and students were actually told the amount that will be donated. The show airs at 3 p.m. on WDIV.
