Update, 6 p.m. Friday: A Ferndale man, 20, who was shot at least once in the face while he reportedly sat in a car with his girlfriend knew his assailants, The Royal Tribune reports.
Original reports said that the gunmen were unknown to the victims.
“We no longer think this was a random robbery attempt,” police Lt. William Wilson said, according to a report by Mike McConnell of the Tribune. “We think there was a connection between the victims and the assailants that was formulated before this crime occurred.”
The paper reports that police said they were called to the area near Wanda and Hazelhurst about 8:10 p.m. Thursday after the man, 20, was shot in an what they initially thought was an apparent robbery attempt.
He and his girlfriend, also 20 years old, both live in the neighborhood, the paper says.
Police said the couple claimed they were approached by two armed, unknown men while sitting in car, and one of the gunmen started shooting.
Investigators learned that the gunmen were not strangers after further interviews with the victims, Wilson tells the paper.
“The public does not need to be afraid,” Wilson said. “This was not a random shooting.”

A 20-year-old man was shot twice in the head outside a home on the 1700 block of E. Hazelhurst Thursday night in Ferndale in what police say was an attempted robbery, WXYZ reports. He was taken to a hospital where his condition was not disclosed.
Police tell 7 Action News that the man and a woman were sitting inside a vehicle when two suspects approached with handguns, and one fired shots. The woman was not injured.
No one has been arrested, the station says.
