Five people died and four were injured in a ravaging fire Wednesday afternoon that swept through a ramshackle, two story brick building on Detroit's east side that was described as a group home, a last stop for the dispossessed, the Detroit News reports. .
The building had eight apartments, most occupied by one or two male adults being treated for substance abuse or mental issues, resident Marcelleus Thomas told the Detroit News.
“Our families didn’t want us. This was the last place for us to go,” Thomas, 54, who returned from an appointment to see his home ablaze, told the paper.
Stong winds helped stoke the fire, reports Christine Ferretti and Francis X. Donnelly of the News. Four residents jumped from the second floor.
A person of interest is being questioned in the deadly fire, reports Fox 2's Hannah Saunders.
