Original post, Wednesday afternoon:
Matt Mika, a Michigan native who graduated from Adrian College and Western Michigan University, is among four people wounded Wednesday morning at a baseball field in Alexandria, Va., during a baseball practice for congressional Republicans.
Mika, who is director of government relations for Tyson Foods, and House Majority Whip Steve Scalise, who was also shot, were both critically wounded, according to media reports.
The gunman, James T. Hodgkinson III, 66, from Illinois, died from gunshot wounds from police.
Mika's friend and former colleague David Palsrok, a former Michigan state representative, talked to Mika's brother in law on Wednesday.
"It sounds like he was shot four to five times," Palsrok tells MLive's Paula Gardner. "And it sounds like he's in critical condition."
Palsrok, now a Lansing-based government policy advisor for Dykema law firm, met Mika when he hired him to run his 2004 campaign.
Mika's parents are traveling from their home in East Lansing to Washington to see their son, MLive reports. Mika is a resident of the Washington area.
Mika previously was a senior legislative assistant for for U.S. Rep. Tim Walberg, R-Mich.
