A memorial service for WXYZ veteran reporter Jim Herrington is scheduled Jan. 27 at 3 p.m. at Temple Kol Ami, 5085 Walnut Lake Rd. in West Bloomfield.
"Farewell to My Friend," a tribute by the station's editorial and public affairs director, Chuck Stokes, is here.
Jim will always be remembered as a reporter’s reporter. The Pennsylvania native and graduate of Northwestern University School of Journalism had a relaxed and folksy style that put all of the people he interviewed at ease. . . .
Upon his retirement, he was the dean of Michigan political reporters.
The newsman, who began his broadcasting career while in the U.S. Navy, died from complications of rheumatoid arthritis, according to The Detroit News. He was 84.Herrington did it all: from questioning presidents, governors and mayors to on-camera interviews with looters during the 1967 riots.
"In my opinion, Jim was everything a reporter should be," said Tim Kiska, a professor at University of Michigan/Dearborn and author of three books about Detroit television journalism, including "From Soupy to Nuts! A History of Detroit Television."
