Some skeptics might find a new commercial for Ohio Gov. John Kasich’s Republican a little cheesy. It tries to illustrate that Kasich can shine light on the darkness in someone's life.

The 30-second ad could be mistaken for a Pure Michigan commercial, Chad Livengood suggests in The Detroit News.

It's narrated by Michigan tourism pitchman and comedian Tim Allen, a Metro Detroit native. A political action committee, New Day for America, will air it in Michigan ahead of the March 8 primary.

What makes the ad particularly seem a little too gushy is the part that features University Georgia student Brett Smith, who talks about the hard time he went through and the need for a hug from Kasich.

Kasich obliges.

“I was in a really dark place for a long time. But I found hope,” Smith told Kasich during a Feb. 18 town hall meeting in Clemson, S.C., the News reports.“And now I found it in my presidential candidate whom I support, and I’d really appreciate one of those hugs you’ve been talking about.”

Then Allen says:  “There is a place for quiet strength — the Oval Office.”
