An FBI translator in the Detroit division with a top-secret security clearance traveled to Syria in 2014 and married a key ISIS operative she had been assigned to investigate, CNN reports.

Translator Daniela Greene, a contractual employee fluent in German, warned her new husband, a German rapper turned ISIS pitchman, he was under investigation, CNN reported, citing federal court records. She also lied to the FBI about her travels.

The breach is an embarrassment to the FBI, which has been involved in the battle against ISIS.

Shortly after marrying Cuspert, Greene, 38, realized made a mistake an returned to the U.S.  where she was arrested and cooperated with authorities.  She pleaded guilty to making false statements involving international terrorism and was sentenced to two years in federal prison, CNN reports. She was released last summer.

Greene now works as a hostess in a hotel lounge. She told CNN that she was fearful of discussing the details of her case.

"If I talk to you my family will be in danger," Greene said.
