At the Downtown Boxing Gym Youth Program at 6445 E. Vernor Hwy in Detroit, homework comes first.

"Books before boxing," is the motto, reports People magazine.

Founded in 2007, the nationally recognized gym requires kids to finish homework before they can put on gloves and jump in the ring.

“If you were a kid in the hood, you tell all of your buddies you’re going to an after school program and I’m going to study, they’re going to laugh at you,”  founder Khali Sweeney tells People. “But if you say I’m going to a boxing gym, ‘Oh, man, I want to go too.’ ”

The People video below tells the story.
