Even before regular episodes of the "Low Winter Sun" TV series are filmed, the AMC show being produced in Detroit generates positive expectations from a national writer.

"I’m looking forward to it," writes Slate culture blog editor David Haglund after seeing a newly released trailer (below).

Though the basic premise is "pretty well-trod territory for prestige cable dramas — the police department setting, the sympathetic antihero who’s done dirty deeds," he's intrigued for this reason:

Moving the story to Detroit and building it around the seemingly tense relationship between a black cop and a white one holds some real dramatic promise.

Local shooting is scheduled to begin in late April and last about three months. The series reportedly will begin airing this summer.

"Low Winter Sun" is based on a 2006 British miniseries and focuses on murder, revenge and corruption. The story begins with the murder of a cop by a fellow Detroit detective, a crime that sends the detective deep into the city's criminal underworld.

Producers qualify for $7.5 million in state tax incentives, the Michigan Film Office announced last month.
