"Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice" was filmed partly in Detroit.

In 2008, Michigan began offering financial incentives to the movie industry to film here. The result was the filming of big-budget movies like "Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice" with Ben Affleck and "Transformers" with Mark Wahlberg. It wasn't unusual to see actors like Ryan Gosling dropping in at a downtown Detroit spot like Cafe d'Mongos.

Then Gov. Rick Snyder ended the incentives in 2015, prompting most productions to go elsewhere. Some critics of the program argued that the state wasn't getting a big enough return on the investment, and that too many jobs were temporary.  Proponents said it was building a credible film industry here while helping businesses, including hotels and restaurants.

Entertainment attorney Howard Hertz, of the firm Hertz Schram of Bloomfield Hills, talks with Deadline Detroit about the importance of creating incentives to again lure films and commercials, and about pending legislation in Lansing to make that happen.

Hertz was just elected to the board of directors of the Michigan Film Industry Association. See the interview:
