Robert Wells

On any given day, on the west side of Griswold Street in downtown Detroit between Congress and Fort streets, you can find valet Robert Wells schmoozing it up with folks, charming them, talking about last night's basketball game or the latest Dan Gilbert development.

Many of the folks he chats with are customers of Global Valet, the company he works for, and plenty are attorneys who work in the Penobscot and Ford buildings where he valet parks cars. If anyone deserves the title of Mayor of Griswold Street, it's Wells, with his presence on that little stretch of concrete.

Born in Alabama, he migrated north with his family to Detroit and graduated from Detroit Central High School in 1989. He attended Wayne State University for a semester, before moving on to other things. He's worked as a valet on Griswold for about five years.

He's a fan of Mayor Mike Duggan and Gilbert. In fact, he'll gladly tell you so.

Deadline Detroit met up with him recently to talk about life on Griswold.
