Update, 4 p.m. Monday: The man at the controls was Corey Blomquist, who contacted Deadline Detroit to identify himself and say: "Glad you enjoyed my video!"
While others enjoyed a 68-degree fall day biking across the Ambassador Bridge, savoring RiverWalk, attending Historic Fort Wayne's flea market, training for next Sunday's marathon or having other outdoor fun, he joysticked the controls of a DJI Phantom quadcopter with a GoPro Hero3+ Black Edition video camera.
The slick two-minute result has airborne views of Belle Isle, Comerica Park, Hart Plaza, the Packard Plant (of course), GM headquarters, the business district and the Coleman A. Young Municipal Center.
Blomquist also has editing skills, which are used to intercut ground-level landmark scenes, a title slide and a chill soundtrack from Bonobo ("First Fires," instrumental).
At r/Detroit, the director-producer-cinematographer says the reel began at the request of a pal on the creative staff at Comerica Park.
My buddy . . . asked if I could help him get some B-roll footage for some videos he'll end up putting on the massive scoreboard screen. He couldn't pay me, but he did pick up lunch, drive me everywhere and give me a tour of the control room!
It sounds like the reel, or scenes from it, will be on the outfield jumbo screen at CoPa this Tuesday through Thursday.
