Unnamed surfer taped this month alongside MSU's campus by WSYM of Lansing.
If there were a prize for creative recreation -- a nice way of saying crazy stunt -- it could go to the steady-footed MSU students in wetsuits featured in footage from WSYM (Fox 47) in Lansing and in the one-minute video below, shot Friday.
The unnamed daredevils took advantage of high water on the Red Cedar River after heavy rain recenty. The river, which cuts through campus, is expected to crest Monday.
A shallow line of boulders creates a wave known as the "east swell."
The Fox affiliate quotes MSU alumnus Joe Matulis, 30-year-old owner of Matuli Paddle Surf in East Lansing, as saying he was the first to surf the wave back in 2004. Five recent photos are on his business website, where he says:
This is not a wave for beginners. . . . This “east swell” only works when the river is at just the right depth and flow rate. With all the submerged rocks, this is not the place to use your best stick [board].
I met some very rad MSU students who were already on it when we got there. It takes a while to figure the spot out, but they were determined and got the hang of it.finitely good for
