Ali Chehade, 22, of Dearborn let his temper take him down a troubled path.

He faces a felony charge of third-degree animal killing in the death of a parakeet at Critter Pet Shop on Ecorse Road in Allen Park on May 18, the Wayne County Prosecutor's Office says. He faces up to four years in prison and up to a $5,000 fine if convicted.

Authorities say Chehade purchased the bird last week for $30, then tried to return it, claiming it had a broken wing, Fox 2 reports. The owner Rick Simms tells the station he was concerned the bird may have been harmed by another bird or animal. The shop offered to try and heal the bird, but gave no refund.

At that point, a store video shows Chehade taking the box with the bird in it and smashing it with his fist and foot before fleeing the scene.

Allen Park District Court Judge Richard Page during a Thursday arraignment called him an alleged bird killer, ordered that he surrender his two pet birds at home and undergo anger management and a psychiatric evaluation, Fox 2 reports.

His attorney, Sheldon Miller of Farmington, describes him as a "bird lover," according to The Detroit News.
