"Can we look in Carlita's desk?
So begins a 13-minute YouTube video, shot in a city office in Duncanville, Texas, that shows authorities searching the desk of Carlita Kilpatrick -- and finding a lock box with a total of $341.
M.L. Elrick, who first reported the story Tuesday night on Fox 2, said the search took place after someone reported there had been a misappropriation of cash.
One of the officials told Kilpatrick she is not in criminal trouble but he made it clear she had violated city policy regarding loose cash. It must be deposited, he said.
"It is change, from, like, ah, overages or different things," Kilpatrick told the official.
He said: "Those things are supposed to be reported," adding: "We're going to have to report this to the city manager."
In July, Kilpatrick, wife of the disgraced Detroit mayor, Kwame Kilpatrick, lost her $41,200 job working for the city of Duncanville. At the time, city officials would say only she didn’t meet the job’s requirements. Her job consisted of overseeing daily operations at the Duncanville Fieldhouse, an athletic facility.
At about the same time she lost her job, Kilpatrick lost her home, where she and her three boys had been living while Kwame Kilpatrick, confined the federal prison in Milan, awaited sentencing Oct. 10 for his March conviction in U.S. District Court for racketeering, fraud and other crimes he committed while he was mayor.
It is unclear how the video, apparently shot by city officials, surfaced on YouTube. It was posted by someone with the screen name Detroit Detective. The video's title: "Show Me the Money."
The officials, who included a uniformed police officer who stood in the corner, observing, spent several minutes counting the money. During the count, Kilpatrick stood next to a white board, fidgeting and looking ill at ease.
She said little during the search.
