One Tough Nerd? Hardly.

Governor Rick Snyder boastrs about being "One Tough Nerd." But a video with WXYZ's Jim Kiertzner shows him acting like One Cowardly Nerd.

Kiertzner confronts the governor on Tuesday at Eastern Market, in wake of Detroit funeral home scandals involving the stockpiling of human remains, and asks if it's enough for the Licensing and Regulatory Affairs (LARA) to have only three inspectors for 750 funeral homes statewide.

Snyder refuses to talk and has Ryan Burklow, his aide for communications and digital marketing, run interference by saying: "I'm sorry but we don't have time."  (Three-minute video is below.)

Snyder just says, "I'm following Ryan."

"Why are you dodging the issue, governor," asks the newsman, trotting to keep pace.

LARA later issues a statement:

We believe the current structure of the funeral home program can ultimately meet our goal of regularly inspecting homes every three years. This inspection schedule is in addition to our complaint-based inspections and inspections of new funeral homes.

Like with the many other regulatory systems in our department, we are continuously reevaluating the program. Prolonged changes in the industry, including an increase in complaints and case complexity, could result in LARA shifting resources to ensure Michigan funeral homes comply with state laws and are held to the highest standards of public health and safety.
