Kriss Andrews has an awkward title -- program management director -- and a big salary -- $220,000, some $50,000 more than that of Mayor Dave Bing.

But he's the turnaround expert from Novi whose job was created by the consent agreement between the city and the state to make sure Detroit stabilizes its finances. 

Speaking to Tom Walsh of the Free Press in his first extensive interview since starting the job July 9, Andrews, 60, emphasized he doesn't expect to oppose Bing. 

"I do not believe that me acting independently or in conflict with the administration would help bring things together. I just can't imagine how that would be the case," Andrews told Walsh in an interview on the 11th floor of city hall, where he has an office near those of Bing and the city's new chief financial officer, Jack Martin.

"I work for Mayor Bing," said Andrews.  "I understand that I could read my job description as in conflict -- but I don't.
