Warren, like much of America, has a problem with heroin and prescription drug abuse.
The city has had nearly a dozen heroin overdoses and two related deaths in recent weeks, Mitch Hotts writes i The Macomb Daily.
At his State of the City address last week, Fouts laid out a series of steps:
- Supplying the city’s police officers with Narcan, an opiate antidote prescription medicine that blocks the effects of opioids and reverses an overdose. The fire department is already equipped with Narcan
- Requesting the DEA obtain search warrants for known drug houses operating in Detroit that funnel heroin to users in Warren and other communities
- A meeting with school superintendents in Warren to develop educational programs to combat addiction.
- Forming a task force made up of city leaders in the Detroit area to address the issue
- Creating an opioids registry and requiring doctors to monitor prescriptions to prevent people from “doctor shopping. Also, limiting opioid prescriptions to people who have cancer or are suffering from a serious illness and try non-opioid painkillers, physical therapy and other methods to treat chronic pain.
