Washington Monthly magazine has rated the University of Michigan as the 12th best university in the nation. The magazine ranked Michigan State University number 30.
The magazine noted that the ranking were based on the school's contribution to the public good in three broad categories: Social Mobility (recruiting and graduating low-income students), Research (producing cutting-edge scholarship and PhDs), and Service (encouraging students to give something back to their country). -- A.L.
