Google Earth Engine has brought together global satellite imagery — trillions of scientific measurements dating back almost 40 years — and makes this massive warehouse of data available to Deadline Detroit readers and others.

The time-lapse imagery shows, in seconds, the growth of suburban Detroit since 1984, and, conversely, the emptying of the city of Detroit.

Clicking on the link will take you to the satellite image of Detroit. Use the arrows on your keyboard to navigate north, east and west to observe the populating of northern Oakland and Macomb counties and western Wayne County and beyond. By 1984, suburban development had already surged well into the cornfields, especially along the radial avenues leading out of Detroit such as Woodward, Gratiot and Grand River.

Thanks to Curbed Detroit for the heads-up.
