Wayne County's ongoing money problems might mean a rise in taxes for residents.
Commissioners probably will ask voters to raise taxes this fall, according to the Detroit News.
Commissioner Kevin McNamara, D-Belleville, on Tuesday floated a proposal for a 0.97-mill tax that would raise $38 million to maintain funding levels for the sheriff, prosecutors and family services.
Executive Robert Ficano is open to the proposal.
"We're going to put it on the November ballot, with your approval," McNamara told fellow commissioners Tuesday. "And we're going to let the voters decide if they're going to fund it."
The proposal also comes one week after voters overwhelmingly voted to renew a 10-year, one-mill tax to fund the county jail.
A vote on the public safety tax is expected by the end of the month.
