The Wayne County Executive's office presented a plan to the County Commission Tuesday morning to eliminate the an annual deficit of between $175-$220 million. Among the the plan's highlights includes selling a county-owned wastewater treatment plant.

Detroit Free Press: Mark Abbo, chief financial officer for Wayne County, said during a Commission of the Whole meeting that drastic steps were necessary to turn the county’s financial standing around. He laid out a plan to rid the county of a $175-million deficit that existed as of Sept. 30. The plan also included reducing beds in the jails, reducing salaries for county employees and leasing the 60,000 square-feet of empty space in the Guardian Building.

Wayne County has seen its revenue drop over the past few years as property taxes and population has dwindled.

If Wayne County is unable to fill their budget hole, the state could appoint an emergency manager to manage the county's finances.
