Mildred Gaddis’ longtime morning slot on Detroit’s NewsTalk AM 1200 (WCHB-AM) will be taken over by the syndicated Tom Joyner Morning Show from 6-10 a.m. weekdays, Susan Whitall reports in The Detroit News.
Gaddis’ show, renamed “The Mildred Gaddis Show,” moves to 4-7 p.m. weekday afternoons on WCHB. For years Gaddis has reigned over the morning urban audience, with newsmakers from all over metro Detroit calling in to be interviewed on her show. Her show will still feature local issues, but will add national content as well. The changes take effect Monday.
Gaddis is a 37-year veteran of radio, and has hosted the "Inside Detroit" since 1999. A Mississippi native, Gaddis made a name for herself on WCHB as a passionate and often controversial morning voice.
Though her show's listeners numbered only 13,000, according to an August article in Crain's Detroit Business by Bill Shea, Gaddis's influence is large among Detroiters who opposed the state takeover of Detroit and the mayoral campaign of Mike Duggan, which turned out to be successful.
Gaddis, an early critic of former Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick, talked frequently about political issues and hosted numerous politicians as guests. Her show carried a large volume of ads for local political races.
Whitall also reports that the Joyner show’s morning shift on Radio One’s Kiss 105.9 (WDMK-FM) will be filled by Detroit radio legend John Mason, who will broadcast “Detroit’s Real Morning Show” live 5:30-10 a.m. weekdays.
