WDIV's Kevin Dietz
WDIV reporter Kevin Dietz and the station's investigative unit have won a prestigious Edward R. Murrow Award in Continuing Coverage in the regional, large television market category for a series of reports on the Macomb County jail death of inmate David Stojcevski.
The award was announced on Tuesday.
Kim Voet, WDIV News director, issued a internal memo earlier this week:
Today we have great news to report. It was just announced minutes ago WDIV is the recipient of a 2016 Edward R. Murrow Award in Continuing Coverage for our series of reports on the Macomb County Jail Death.
As you might remember Kevin Dietz broke the story and video of inmate David Stojcevski’s death while in the jail. Kevin, Mike Arcilesi, Vanessa Ogletree, Ben Bell and Ro Coppola poured over more than 240 hours of painful video showing Stojcevski’s time in jail. He suffered from serious drug withdrawal use, losing more than 50 pounds in just 16 days and the video shows him hallucinating and shaking with seizures in the days and hours leading up to his death. The FBI is reviewing the case and we are hoping for a follow-up soon.
This is a great day for our station and a great day for our investigative unit. The prestigious Edward R. Murrow Award is one of the highest honors in our profession. The Defenders are having quite a week having picked up the Wade H. McCree Award for the Advancement of Justice for our story on Floyd Dent this past Sunday. Both investigations are great examples of solid journalism that matters. Please join me in congratulating Kevin and everyone who worked on the Macomb County Jail Death on their Murrow recognition.
