Kevin Dietz of WDIV has a disturbing report that shows water leaking in Detroit homes and buildings. The Detroit water department often ignores the problem even when someone calls.

Consumers pay for the ineptness, he says, as water bills have gone up the past 10 years in a row.

The problem stems from copper pipe thefts, causing serious leaks, the reporter explains. At one home, a neighbor reported a leak for more than a year without getting action.

These are not little leaks. Dietz reports that at that home they determined that about 7,000 gallons were leaking from pipes a day.

He reported that after he called the water department about that home, it took six weeks for them to come by and turn off the water. -- A.L.
