WDIV's Steve Garagiola has a tip for husbands when it comes to "unprovoked kindness" and wives.

It happened at the grocery store and he shares this on his Facebook page. It's used here with permission.

"I'm sure wives all over Metro Detroit  would appreciate your post," he writes to Deadline Detroit.

Here's the story.

Just had an interesting encounter in the grocery store that I am compelled to share. Ladies please busy yourselves for a few minutes. I'm talking to the men right now, particularly the married men. Fellas, here's what happened.

My wife had a challenging week, so I thought I would get her a bouquet of flowers. Nothing fancy or extravagant (and I readily admit this is not something I do very often).

In the span of five minutes, three people (two men and one woman) approached me and said, "Oh, are you in trouble?"

This got me thinking.

Do we (husbands) extend this sort of unprovoked kindness to our wives so infrequently that those who witness the event simply can't imagine we have no motivation of self-interest (like sucking up to get out of trouble).

This is not good. We need to change this.

I propose a husband's pledge: At least once a week I will do something nice for my wife that is spontaneous and without expectation of anything in return.

If we all follow this course, soon, people will no longer be shocked at a man doing something nice for his wife.

Okay, ladies, you can come back now.
