You always have some expectations of your bus driver. You want your driver to obey the laws of the road.
And you definitely don't want your driver to be legally drunk, or for that matter, really really legally drunk.
Fox 2 reports that a DDOT bus driver, 53, was taken into custody after driving erratically late Tuesday night. He blew .20 when tested for drinking. The legal limit in Michigan is .08. You do the math.
Fox 2 reports that passengers suspected the driver was drinking. The station reports that a 3-year-old boy and his father were on the bus when it swiped the cars and swerved on the road. They went to the hospital.
One passenger, Michael Henderson, tells Fox 2:
"We kind of smelled alcohol on the bus but we thought somebody just spilled something, and one of the passengers noticed that the bus driver actually pocketed the money that was supposed to go into the machine," he says.
"He didn't even really seem drunk at first. He just kind of was just talking to everybody like normal, but when he started talking about not really caring about losing his job, he slurred his words a lot so it was kind of like, oh yeah, he's messed up."
The driver was immediately suspended pending a review and investigation, Fox 2 reported.
"He'll have to go through the trial board. The odds are that, if the allegations are true, he'll be, it'll be 30 days pending discharge. In the meantime, we can assist him with getting some help," William Williams, vice president of the Amalgamated Transit Union's Local 26, told Fox 2. -- A.L.
