No is suggesting West Bloomfield Treasurer Teri Weingarden has done anything illegal. However, her critics accuse her of incompetence and, following an investigation, the township board is asking Gov. Rick Snyder to remove Weingarden from office.

The allegations against Weingarden include improper investment of township funds and poor record keeping of cash transactions.

The governor has the authority to remove local officials for criminal wrongdoing or gross incompetence. It has been decades since a governor has exercised that power.

Weingarden defends her tenure as West Bloomfield's treasurer.

Detroit Free Press: But the clerk blew the mistakes out of proportion, refused to cooperate on work issues and orchestrated the investigation to make her look bad, Weingarden said. She said she closed her office on Oct. 9 for four hours because she’d lost key subordinates and was forced to do “three jobs at once,” computers were acting up and “I had staff members in my office crying” from job stress.

“And I was violently ill. This stress has been very hard on me,” Weingarden said.

The West Bloomfield Board of Trustees voted 5-2 to ask Gov. Snyder to remove Weingarden.
